The Rio Grande Valley of Texas was a hot-bed for lawsuit abuse in the 1980s and early 1990s. Local employers, civic leaders and doctors watched as frivolous lawsuits and outlandish damage awards took away job opportunities, raised consumer prices and limited access to health care.
In late 1990, local citizens decided to fight back – and the nation's first Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) group was born. CALA’s mission is the same today as it was then – to empower the public by informing them of the toll lawsuit abuse takes on all of us.
The launch of CALA in the Rio Grande Valley sparked a grassroots-driven movement that has spread statewide and across the nation. With more than 25,000 supporters in Texas alone, CALA groups play a pivotal role in the lawsuit abuse debate.
